Not Everyone Who Chooses Assisted Living Realize How Wonderful It Will Be
Allison was 73, widowed, living alone, and struggling. She had heard about assisted living plenty throughout her life, and for many years she thought about it in terms of other types of facility care. She had misconceptions about it, so she never thought assisted living would be for her.
As an elder care option, assisted living can be great for many people, but it isn’t for everyone. Even for those who may feel reluctant in choosing assisted living for the future, they often come to realize just how wonderful it can be.
What makes assisted living so great?
First, it’s about the support. Allison discovered when she moved into an assisted living community near her former home that she no longer had to worry if she was feeling weak, fatigued, or having trouble just getting out of bed one morning.
It didn’t happen often, but because of arthritis and other issues, she found it difficult to get going some days. Having that staff, the support ready to help her whenever she needed it, was a great relief.
Second, it is about connection. Allison had been feeling isolated and alone, living by herself for a number of years now. When she lost her license to drive and didn’t have public transportation to rely on, she was no longer able to visit with friends or even family.
When she first moved into this assisted living facility, she connected with others. She reconnected with friends she hadn’t seen in many years, too. It felt great to have those connections once again, even though her best friends were still living on their own and not ready for assisted living themselves just yet.
Not everyone will have the same experiences.
This is true of almost every situation. People are different and just because somebody like Allison came to realize the value in assisted living and how great it is, doesn’t mean all seniors are going to feel that way.
Some people will come to realize assisted living is beneficial only once they need more and more support throughout the day. Others may not ever come to that realization because they are fixated on hating the very things that could be beneficial because it doesn’t fall in line with what they expected at this stage in their life.
How can you determine if an aging person in your life would benefit?
Just about every senior could benefit from assisted living. When you’re talking about elder care options for people of advancing years, assisted living is one of the best to look into.
It isn’t for everyone, though. If a person does not enjoy being active, would prefer to just be in their house alone, would prefer to get support from a family member or friend once in a blue moon, only when that family member or friend is available and not when the senior needs him or her, then they might not enjoy assisted living.
But, like Allison, they will likely come to realize just how beneficial and wonderful this elder care option is, once they have been there for a few weeks or months.
