Some Activities Seniors May Enjoy, Depending on the Assisted Living Facility They Choose
When it comes to elder care, not every assisted living facility is the same. Some will have basic amenities while others will be more luxurious. Some may be in urban environments while others are in a country setting. For the former, there may not be many outdoor walking areas, and it may not be possible to do your own garden, but there will likely be more access to galleries, museums, and maybe even parks.
Depending on where an elderly person lives and where they choose to go for assisted living, there might be different amenities and activities. We’re going to look at some activities that seniors may enjoy at certain elder care facilities. Just keep in mind that this is not a blanket list specifying what’s available at all of them.
Indoor fitness facilities.
An indoor gym can be a great place for an aging senior to get valuable exercise. Doctors agree that getting 15 minutes of cardiovascular exercise every day is essential to good health for everyone, including elderly men and women.
Not all assisted living facilities will have an indoor gym or other fitness facilities, but when they do, it’s a great place for residents to go, walk a treadmill, ride an exercise bicycle, or do other exercises to improve muscle strength and increase the heart rate.
Afternoon tea socials.
The facility may have a coffee bar or place where residents can enjoy afternoon tea and socialize. Social activities are just as vital as physical exercise for helping maintain a high quality of life and positive mental health.
Even a facility that doesn’t have a formal coffee bar area may have an area designated for afternoon socializing and other similar events.
Movies.
Whether it’s a classic film or something new, residents should be able to enjoy a quality movie on a decent screen with decent surround sound. Even though some seniors may have difficulty with their hearing, they should be able to enjoy the movie if there’s closed captioning available.
Special clubs.
Whether it’s a chess club, playing board games, book clubs, gardening, playing card games, or something else, clubs are a great way for people to maintain a strong social life, which is vital for good mental and emotional health and well-being.
Holiday parties.
When the holidays roll around, this is a wonderful time for people to celebrate life, grandchildren, family, friends, and much more. It’s also a good reminder of times in their younger years when maybe they brought out a Christmas tree and decorated it or had a menorah or some other decoration that was suitable for their beliefs.
Holiday parties these days tend to be more generic so as to include as many people as possible, but the concept is the same: bringing people together to celebrate the year and each other.
Hobbies.
There are many hobbies people enjoy, and seniors are no different. Whether it’s art, music, putting together models, playing shuffleboard, or doing other similar activities, hobbies are great ways for aging men and women to continue feeling youthful to some degree.
