What could your aging mother actually do at assisted living? It is a wonderful elder care option that millions of older Americans have chosen through the years. Some of them may have chosen it with enthusiasm. Others may have been reluctant. Some might have felt this was the only option available to them.

Yet, at the end of the day, the vast majority of elderly men and women who choose assisted living for their future end up loving their time. There are plenty of activities, people to meet, friends to make, and maybe even people to reconnect with whom they haven’t seen in many years.

Learning a new form of art.

Not every assisted living facility is the same. That’s why it is so important to go on a tour — even if it is a virtual tour these days — or speak to an administrator before you commit to a particular community.

Yet, many of them will have certain types of arts and crafts for their residents to participate in. An art teacher may come in and provide free instructions to some of the residents. They may offer transportation to go to an art gallery or to participate in other types of creative endeavors.

Learning a musical instrument.

Some people may have wanted to learn a musical instrument a long, long time ago, but raising children, pursuing a career, or simply working to make ends meet made it so that they didn’t have time or financial resources to do so.

If the assisted living community provides music lessons for some of the residents, this could be a great opportunity for your mother to pursue something she always wanted to do.

What about dancing?

Again, depending on the facility, there may be opportunities for residents to learn a new form of dance. Even if there are no instructions or instructors coming in, there may be opportunities for some musical fun in a safe environment.

Visiting art galleries.

If your mother loves going to art galleries, museums, or other places of interest, she may still be able to do that with the right assisted living community. Some facilities will provide transportation to their residents to go to doctors’ appointments and to do some shopping, but they may also provide trips to local art galleries, museums, and other key destinations.

She might even be able to learn new games.

Has your mother ever played chess? What about bridge? There may be a wide range of games and other forms of entertainment your mother has never pursued for one reason or another. At this new assisted living facility, she is calling home, they might have game night, opportunities for residents to learn something new, and organized events to help everyone have a great time.
