Planning for the New Year with a Conversation About Assisted Living

Depending on when you read this article, the New Year is either fast approaching or already here. If there’s an elderly person in your family who is having difficulty taking care of themselves, their property, cleaning their home, or anything else, assisted living is a wonderful senior care topic to discuss. Now.

You might be looking after them the best you can. If you are a long-distance caregiver, that means you might be calling to check in on them every couple of days, maybe even every day. Is that really going to be effective?

To some degree it might be. However, if somebody is struggling to get up and down the stairs, takes a long time just to get out of bed, has given up on personal hygiene or cleaning the house, is not eating right, losing weight, and so forth, they would do well with regular, around-the-clock support on hand. You simply can do that for them at a distance.

Assisted living provides that kind of support.

Assisted Living Valley, AZ: Preparing for the New Year

That doesn’t mean a resident of an assisted living community is going to be supported 24 hours a day, seven days a week, especially if they are bedridden. However, for somebody who is still ambulatory, but might need help getting out of bed some mornings, getting into and out of the shower or going to the bathroom, taking their medications, and so forth, assisted living can provide a wonderful oasis of opportunity, especially to an aging senior who has spent most of the last several months or years of their life alone, isolated, and frustrated.

New year is a time for fresh starts. It’s a time for people to let go of the past and have an opportunity to start anew. This could be the perfect chance for you and that elderly person in your life to get a fresh start.

How can you bring up the topic of assisted living?

Discuss the various options that are available. If the senior requires significant medical attention and has been getting that from you or a visiting nurse, for example, but it is becoming too much, talk about how assisted living can help.

Many people don’t realize it, but a quality assisted living facility will be able to offer a variety of medical supports, including administering medications, checking vital stats, having a registered nurse come by regularly to check on the residents. They’ll also have some regular doctor visits.

Some assisted living facilities will have regular dental visits or trips to a local dentist, optometrists, and so forth. The medical needs of an aging senior can often be met at assisted living in ways that are very difficult, if not impossible, to be done at home.

Make one of your New Year’s resolutions a conversation about this incredible senior care option: assisted living. You may even discover that some of the activities, arts and crafts, music, education, entertainment, and other benefits that a specific assisted living community offers is precisely what the aging senior in your life would absolutely love to pursue.
