Yes, You Can Travel this Holiday Season, even though Mom Just Settled into Assisted Living
Emily’s mother recently made the transition to one of the top elder care options available: assisted living. During the past few years, Emily was wearing herself out, burning the midnight oil, burning that candle on both ends. She and her mother knew it, but for a long time neither one really knew what could be done about it.
Then one day, Emily’s coworker noticed just how stressed she was about supporting and caring for her mother daily and recommended assisted living. She told Emily that her family made that decision when she, too, was feeling overwhelmed and completely worn out.
“I just didn’t know what more I could do,” her coworker told her one afternoon when Emily was in tears in the lady’s room. “It turned out to be the best decision we could have made.”
“What do you mean?” Emily couldn’t reason how putting her mother ‘in a home’, as she saw it at the time, could be a positive thing. In truth, she didn’t know much about assisted living in the least.
“For three years I had given up everything to support my mother,” her coworker continued. “I didn’t even get to spend time with my sisters during Christmas and missed most birthday celebrations. My mother couldn’t travel and that meant I had to be there with her instead.”
“But when she moved to assisted living, she was okay with it?”
“Not at first, but that’s because neither one of us knew anything about it. I thought it was like some other elder care facilities, you know, the kind that don’t get a good reputation?”
“Yeah, I know what you mean,” Emily replied.
“But assisted living can offer seniors so much that they don’t get staying at home, especially if they’re all alone,” her coworker said.
Emily researched assisted living more.
She wasn’t content to just accept her coworker’s advice on the subject; she needed to know exactly what assisted living could offer her mother. What she discovered was pretty much what she had been told.
It was such a positive option that she was actually upset no one had recommended it to her or her mother before.
After some convincing, her mother agreed.
Emily helped her mother prepare for this transition. It took a couple of months going through personal items she had collected over the course of her life and thin things down to just the basic essentials, but by the end of October, she was settled in and loving this new ‘lease on life’, as she called it.
That allowed Emily to begin making plans to visit with other family and friends she hadn’t seen in a few years over the holiday season. She didn’t want to abandon her mother, but her mother offered her blessing to go and travel.
Without the worries of what would happen to her mother while she traveled, Emily felt refreshed and recharged when she returned home. Deciding on assisted living was a gift not just for her mother, but for her as well. It can be for you and your aging parent who needs assistance regularly.
